Dal 3 al 7 luglio si è svolta a Dublino (CASTeL - Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Teaching and Learning, DCU - Dublin City University) la Conferenza internazionale GIREP-ICPE-EPEC 2017 sul tema “Bridging Research and Practice in Physics Teaching and Learning”.

Using metaphors in teaching physics to student teachers”.

Hans Fuchs è stato poi invitato a prendere parte della tavola rotonda condotta da Paula Heron “Teaching goals for energy: What should students learn about what energy is?”, insieme ad altri due esperti di didattica dell'energia.

GIREP 2017: INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR THE CENTRE MANIS

“Best Phd Student Oral Prize supported by Girep 2017” to Alessandra Landini, student of the Doctoral School in Human Sciences, Unimore

The international Conference GIREP-ICPE-EPEC 2017 (July 3-7) themed “Bridging Research and Practice in Physics Teaching and Learning” took place in Dublin (CASTel- Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Teaching and Learning, DCU - Dublin City University),.

The biennial conference of the Groupe International de Recherche sur l'Enseignement de la Physique (GIREP) is the reference conference for the European research in didactic of physics, organized in concert with the European Physical Society (EPS), the International Commission on Physics Education (ICPE) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

This year, within the framework of the Conference, the symposium "Conceptual Metaphor in Physics Education" has been arranged. The event has been promoted by Federico Corni, Didactic of physics professor at the Education and Human Sciences Department (DESU) of UNIMORE, and by Hans Fuchs, “cultore della materia” DESU, former professor at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur, both co-founders of the Centre for Metaphor and Narrative in Science (MANIS).

Many researchers have participated to the Symposium, thereby contributing to a deep discussion ended with a manifestation of interest and appreciation for the research work presented. Hans Fuchs explained what he means for conceptual metaphor and what are the metaphorical bases of physics in the macroscopic world, with a contribution entitled "Metaphor and Myth: the roots of analogical structure in Macroscopic Physical Science". Prof. Federico Corni discussed the foundations and structure of the Physics course he has developed (and still offers) within the Master Degree Course in Primary Education Sciences, with a contribute titled "Using metaphors in teaching physics to Student teachers ". After this contribution, Elisabeth Dumont of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur, also co-founder of the MANIS Centre, presented "Visual Metaphors as Applied to Process Diagrams". The symposium closed with Jesper Haglund and his proposal entitled "The Disorder Metaphor for Entropy: Friend Or Foe?”. At the end of the symposium the debate suggested interesting ideas for continuing research in the field.

Dr Alessandra Landini, of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, presented the oral contribution "The role of playing in the representation of the concept of energy: a lab experience for future teachers" (signed by Landini, Corni, Giliberti), concerning the use of playing and narration forms for the study of energy chains during a physics lab. The linguistic-metaphorical and gestural analysis of dramatizations has been analysed to highlight strengths and criticalities of the metaphorical approach to energy study for future teachers.

Moreover Hans Fuchs was invited to take part in the Round Table "Learning goals for energy: What should students learn about what energy is?” led by Paula Heron, along with two other energy education experts. The debate, which saw a classroom crowded by scholars from around the world was, for professor Heron, the continuation of the symposium held few days before, and confirmed the interest and complexity of the issue of energy and the implications of the approach used in the teaching-learning process.

At the closing ceremony of the Congress, Dr. Landini received the award "Best Phd Student Oral Prize supported by Girep 2017" for her presentation. It is an important prize, since it recognizes the value of the work and research that DESU is carrying with the MANIS Centre in the field of scientific education.

The interest in the international scientific community, the acknowledgments gained and the lively debate aroused are demonstrations of the increasing interest in the research lines carried out by the MANIS Centre. An experience that has strengthened determination in pursuing studies that are gathering attention among scientists. UNIMORE is becoming a point of reference in international research and coordination in this innovative chapter of physics teaching, focused on the use of metaphor and narrative. "The award given to Dr Landini is really a wonderful news for our Research Centre and for the entire Department," commented Professor Annamaria Contini, director of the Manis Centre. "In addition to complimenting Dr Landini for the well-deserved acknowledgment, I want to extend my appreciation to the entire group who attended the Dublin Conference."
