Abstract Seminario Zoltan Kovecses

METAPHOR, NARRATIVE, EMOTION, SCIENCE

Zoltán Kövecses Eötvös - Loránd University Budapest

My basic objective in this talk is to describe some of the relations between the four concepts in the title. I organize the discussion around the concept of metaphor, which plays a key role in the other three concepts. First, I begin by providing a brief introduction to conceptual metaphor theory, with a particular focus on the issue of what kinds of conceptual metaphors (resemblance or correlation-based) can be found in scientific narratives. Second, I discuss the structuring role of metaphor in discourse in general. Third, I turn to the issue of the relationship between metaphor and emotion, and show how metaphor can conceptually structure emotions in both folk (lay) and expert (scientific) theories of emotion. I also point out here that the folk-theoretical conception of emotions can actually structure literary discourse and that conceptual metaphors play a role in this. Fourth, and finally, I take up the issue of how some conceptual metaphors can be used in scientific narratives to facilitate the understanding of complex phenomena. Interestingly, these conceptual metaphors, in addition to describing the phenomena, can also express various emotions.
